All About Florida College and State University Fees

Whether you already have a Prepaid Plan or are looking to purchase one, you may be wondering what fees are charged by Florida schools and what exactly is covered by us. While tuition covers the basic costs of instruction, the other fees exist to help cover the other costs of operating a school. Below you’ll find a glossary of the fees charged by Florida Colleges and State Universities and, more importantly, how they work with your Prepaid Plan. This should not be considered a comprehensive list and you should contact the school you plan to attend for more specific information.

Glossary of Fees
(and what they mean)

Tuition (State University Plan)

These are part of the mandatory fees charged by schools and covered under Prepaid Plans as Tuition. No matter what, your Prepaid Plan guarantees the cost of Tuition at a State University.

Fees covered under Tuition in a State University Plan:

Matriculation Fee – This fee is what many people know plainly as tuition, the basic fee charged for instruction at a school.

Student Financial Aid Fee – This fee is charged for Financial Aid purposes. It does not exceed five percent of tuition.

Capital Improvement Fee – This fee helps maximize the use of existing facilities and promotes campus development.

Tuition (Florida College Plan)

These are part of the mandatory fees charged by schools and covered under Prepaid Plans as Tuition. No matter what, your Prepaid Plan guarantees the cost of Tuition at a Florida College.

Fees covered under Tuition in a Florida College Plan:

Tuition Fee – This fee is what many people know as tuition, the basic fee charged for instruction at a school.

Student Financial Aid Fee – This fee is charged for Financial Aid purposes. It does not exceed five percent of tuition.

Capital Improvement Fee – This fee helps maximize the use of existing facilities and promotes campus development.

Tuition Differential Fee

Charged just by State Universities, this fee was approved by the 2007 Florida Legislature to support undergraduate programs and services.

Local Fees

Specific fees charged by both Florida Colleges and State Universities. These fees are mandatory even if the services aren’t used by the student.

Athletics Fee – Supports a school’s athletic programs.

Activities and Services Fee – Supports student boards and organizations to improve services related to student activities.

Health Fee – Provides students with access to campus-based health services.

Technology Fee*  – In this context, Technology Fee refers only to the Technology Fee charged by Florida Colleges to support technology access.

Campus Fees

These are any and all other fees charged by a specific school to cover any campus costs. These could include: Transportation Fees, Student Facilities Fees, Lab Fees or Green Fees.

Want to know which fees are charged by a specific school and how much they may be? No problem! Each school lists a cost breakdown on their website. Though each one is organized a little different, they all have certain costs and fees in common. Tuition Differential Fee – your plan does not cover Tuition Differential Fees. However, should you want to cover those costs, you can purchase Tuition Differential Fee Plan. This supplement plan will guarantee the costs of Tuition Differential Fees.

Local Fees – your plan does not cover Local Fees. However, should you want to cover those costs, you can purchase the Local Fee Plan. This supplement plan will guarantee the costs of these Local Fees.*

Campus Fees – your plan does not cover Campus Fees.

Contract Year 2007 and Earlier

Your plan includes:

Tuition Differential Fee – however, all 4-Year University and 2 + 2 Prepaid Plans purchased before 2007 are exempt from paying the Tuition Differential Fee. So, while it’s not covered in your plan, you won’t have to worry about paying it.

Local Fees – your plan does not cover Local Fees. However, should you want to cover those costs, you can purchase the Local Fee Plan. This supplement plan will guarantee the costs of these Local Fees.*

Campus Fees – your plan does not cover Campus Fees.


*The Technology Fee is covered only by 2-Year Florida College and 4-Year Florida College Plans or their associated Local Fee Plans purchased after July 1, 1999.


**Because the Tuition Differential Fee is charged only by State Universities it is covered only by Florida Prepaid College Plans with State University benefits (2 + 2 Florida Plan, 1-Year Florida University Plan and 4-Year Florida University Plan).
