Next week, from February 24 to March 1, is America Saves Week. Coordinated by the America Saves Campaign and the American Savings Education Council, America Saves Week is a chance for organizations to promote savings to families and individuals in the nation.
In honor of America Saves Week, we here at the Florida Prepaid College Program would like to take the time to reiterate the importance that saving for your child’s education now could have on their future.
Did you know a child with a college savings plan is seven times more likely to attend college than one without one? It’s true, but maybe not for the reason you think. Research studies show that it’s not how much is in the account, but simply having one that can help encourage a student to think about college. So, whether you can start with $5 or $500 doesn’t matter – starting one will make all the difference.
In case you’re not completely convinced of the importance a college degree will have in your child’s life, here are some facts we think each parent should know:
- A student with a bachelor’s degree can earn $1.6 million more in their lifetime than a student with only a high school degree
- In 2012 the unemployment rate for bachelor’s degree holders was 4.5%. For those with only a high school diploma it was 8.3%.
- Millennials (those between 25 and 32) with a bachelor’s degree earn $17,500 more than Millennials with high school diplomas
So what are you waiting for? The road to college starts now, and opening a savings account will get your child moving in the right direction. Don’t waste another minute – save now, it could change their life.
