Florida Bright Futures Scholarships and Florida Prepaid – an Amazing Combo!
High school graduation is an exciting and very busy time in your student’s life. We congratulate you and hope that you both enjoy the celebrations!
Now that your student is ready to use their Prepaid Plan, rest assured that the plan also works great together with a Florida Bright Futures Scholarship to cover even more college costs.
Florida’s colleges and universities make it easy for students to use these two programs in tandem.
- In most cases, the Florida college or university will bill Florida Prepaid first, and then any Bright Futures awards can help cover the remaining expenses that are not covered under the Prepaid Plan (such as books, transportation or lab fees).
- The remaining balance of the Bright Futures award is usually deposited to the student’s bank account, and those funds could be used toward housing and other living expenses.
- Prepaid Plans and Bright Futures Scholarships can be used during the summer.

Prepaid Plans are designed to provide you with usage options to best fit your circumstances. The Account Owner can:
- Defer the use of the Prepaid Plan and only use the Bright Futures Scholarship at this time. This would allow the student to save the Prepaid Plan for later use, even graduate school.
- Request a scholarship refund. A scholarship refund request can be made each semester and will pay the same amount as would have been paid to the school.
- Transfer a Prepaid Plan to a family member who is a Florida resident. The plan benefits would need to be used within the original 10-year benefit period.
