Tuition and Fees

  • What fees do Florida schools charge, and what does Florida Prepaid cover?

Tuition covers the basic costs of instruction, but Florida schools charge additional fees to support campus operations and student services. Prepaid Plans cover certain fees, while others may not be included. It’s best to contact the school your student plans to attend for a detailed breakdown of their tuition and fees.

  • Does Florida Prepaid cover out-of-state, private, or trade schools?

Yes, while Prepaid Plans are designed for Florida schools, they pay the same value to out-of-state, private, and trade schools as they would to a Florida school when your child attends college.

  • How can I find out which fees a school charges?

Most schools list a detailed cost breakdown on their websites. Although each school may categorize costs differently, they typically include tuition and mandatory fees. You can view Florida State University’s website as an example.

  • What is included in tuition, and does Florida Prepaid cover these costs?

Tuition includes mandatory fees that Prepaid Plans cover at Florida Colleges and State Universities. These fees include:

    • Matriculation Fee: Commonly known as tuition, this is the basic fee charged for instruction.
    • Student Financial Aid Fee: A fee charged to support financial aid, typically not exceeding 5% of tuition.
    • Capital Improvement Fee: A fee used to improve existing facilities and support campus development.

  • Are there other fees categorized as tuition that Florida Prepaid does not cover?

Yes, for billing summary purposes, schools may categorize some additional fees under a general “tuition” category. However, these extra fees are not covered by your Prepaid Plan.

  • What is the Tuition Differential Fee, and is it covered by Florida Prepaid?

The Tuition Differential Fee is charged only by State Universities to support undergraduate programs and services. It is covered by Prepaid Plans that include State University benefits, such as the 2 + 2 Florida Plan, 1-Year Florida University Plan, and 4-Year Florida University Plan.

  • What are Local Fees, and are they covered by Prepaid Plans?

Local Fees are charged by both Florida Colleges and State Universities. They are mandatory, even if the student does not use the related services. Local Fees include:

    • Athletics Fee: Supports a school’s athletic programs.
    • Activities and Services Fee: Funds student boards and organizations to improve services related to student activities.
    • Health Fee: Provides students with access to campus-based health services.
    • Technology Fee: Supports technology access. This fee is covered only by 2-Year Florida College and 4-Year Florida College Plans or their associated Local Fee Plans.

  • What are Campus Fees, and does Florida Prepaid cover them?

Campus Fees are additional fees charged by individual schools to cover campus-specific costs. These fees include, but are not limited to, Transportation Fees, Student Facilities Fees, Lab Fees, and Green Fees. Campus Fees are not covered by Prepaid Plans.
